Review

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? [them that are] weaned from the milk, [and] drawn from the breasts. 10  For precept [must be] upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, [and] there a little: 11  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

(Isaiah 28:9-11)

M.O.G. REVIEW OF BIBLE STUDY SOFTWARE

Determine the type of device from which you will be accessing your Bible Study Software and locate the review for your device, below.

If you have a Mac computer, you have two choices, e-Sword X and Bible Analyzer.

If you have a Linux computer, both Xiphos and Bible Analyzer offer a Linux version.

If you have a Windows desktop or laptop, your choices are: PureSearch KJV, e-Sword, Blue Letter Bible, theWordBible Analyzer, and Xiphos (see below for a brief overview on each of these packages).

If you need a portable installation for a USB drive, both theWord and Bible Analyzer have an option to do so.

If you are only using a mobile phone or tablet, we consider these to be the best:

e-Sword LT-- For Apple iPhone/iPod Touch users.

For iPad Users-- e-Sword HD or iBible-Study HD  (theWord for iPad).

For Android users-- e-Sword or MySword (there is a free version and a paid version) or And Bible.

Blue Letter Bible-- This is an On-Line Browser based service (see below for more details).

(Please note that these mobile choices usually have a low purchase price.)

There are a few alternatives to the above software (in case you are looking for something other than a feature-rich program).  These options are as follow:

If you simply looking for a way to view the Bible offline, we recommend the PDF option (just save the file to your system and name it “KJV Bible.pdf”).

If you are desiring a feature-rich, “browser based” product that works across most platforms, we recommend “Blue Letter Bible”.

If you just want a nice and simple online Bible, then the KJV Bible Online site. This site is very easy to navigate and is a stress-free experience (it also looks good on smartphones and tablets).

Lastly, we have included the Original AKJV Bible, in PDF format, for historical reference. There is an elaborate genealogy in the preface (and we do mean “elaborate”). If you have extra time, it is a fun expedition that will surely expand your knowledge base (just save the file to your system and name it “AKJV Bible.pdf”).

Let’s take a quick look at the “Bible Study Software” column:

PureSearch Free KJV Bible Study Software:

This software is nice because it is comprehensive and standalone with no plugins or external downloads required. It is very much “what you see is what you get”. When you boot it up, you will see three very prominent windows and a forth smaller window in the lower right-hand corner. These four three columns (third column has two boxes with bible on top and small dictionary on the bottom). Search Parameters and Search (left column), Search Results (center column), King James Bible 1769 (right-top column), and Webster 1828 Dictionary (right bottom column).

In our opinion, this is the easiest “full study” software package available and can be mastered very quickly.

This software is free.

e-Sword Free Bible Study Software:

This is the main software we use. It has many functions and can be expanded with commentaries, dictionaries, maps, and other Bible versions (including historical Bibles like the 1611 AKJV, the Bishop’s, and the Geneva). It also has a “compare” function, and a powerful search function that works with the commentaries and dictionaries as well. There is a powerful “memory verse” tool and many note taking tools included.

There is a moderate learning curve, but this is an easy software to master and use without prior skill.

The Mac and Windows versions are free, the iPhone and iPad versions are not free, but are affordable.

Also, “Add-on” Bible versions and commentaries are available at additional cost via the e-Sword “Download” tab located on the upper screen task bar.

Blue Letter Bible Online Study Bible:

This is a unique choice and doesn’t compare directly to any of the other software on the Resources page. The entire system is “browser-based” with nothing installed on your computer. This is nice because it is accessible from any device anywhere you have internet access.

To utilize this offering, you simply set up a free account. All of your highlighting and notes are saved to the cloud.

BLB has many charts and study resources, along with daily scripture, a hymn library and many plans (over various timetables) for reading your Bible.

This program is free and has options to purchase additional books.

theWord Free Bible Study Software:

This is a more “advanced user” version of e-Sword with even more features and functions. This software is still easy to learn, but has the steepest learning curve compared to all the others. theWord is the newest and, arguably, the best free Bible software. Please note that the default bible selection is set to “NET”. You must manually select “KJV” on the upper task bar of the Bible Reader to make this your default Bible.

We recommend this to users who have the time to learn all the tricks and functions. Also, the user interface is highly customizable with almost every aspect being modifiable.

Add-on Bible versions and commentaries are available at additional cost via the "Add Titles” tab located on the upper screen task bar. This software is free, the iPad version is under the iBible-Study HD name and is also free.

theWord has a portable installation option, which allows the whole program to be installed on a flash drive.

Xiphos Free Linux Bible Study Software:

We don’t have too much experience with this one, but it looks clean and has similar functions to e-Sword and theWord. This is the only option on our Resources page for those running a Linux OS. Also, there is a Windows version.

This software is free, and may have free and purchasable Bible versions and commentaries.

**Note: Our most recent addition to the Bible Software page, "Bible Analyzer" also has a Linux OS version.

e-Sword X Free Mac Bible Study Software:

This is the Mac version of e-Sword. This is one of the two options on our Resources page for those using an Apple Mac.

This software is free, the iPhone and iPad versions are not free, but are affordable.

Also, “Add-on” Bible versions and commentaries are available at additional cost via the e-Sword “Download” tab located on the upper screen.

Bible Analyzer Free Bible Study Software:

This software has three different versions, Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu Linux, and it has a similar feel to e-Sword. The software is clean with a nice user interface and has advanced search functions.

This program is free and has options to purchase additional modules through their module downloader.

Bible Analyzer has a portable installation option for Windows, which allows the whole program to be installed on a flash drive.

e-Sword Android Bible Study Software:

The Android version of e-Sword has finally arrived! This looks very similar to the iPhone version and should be familiar to users of the other versions of e-Sword.

This software is very affordable.

Add-on Bible versions and commentaries are available, and free e-Sword and theWord modules are compatible; but they need to be manually installed.

MySword Android Bible Study Software:

This is Android software is compatible with e-Sword modules and is good if you like to tinker. Other than some questionable business practices, it looks like a solid choice.

This software has a free lite version, the Premium and Deluxe versions are not free, as they require a "donation" (they have to be purchased) of $25 (Premium) or $50 (Deluxe).

Add-on Bible versions and commentaries are available, and free e-Sword and theWord modules are compatible; but they need to be manually installed.

And Bible Android Bible Study Software:

This is our favorite free Android Bible software. It has enough pre loaded to get you started without any extra work.

This software is free and open source, you can find it on and off the Play Store.

Adding Audio Bibles to your Bible software:

Some of the above Bible Study software can be equipped with an audio module. Doing this can take a little work to complete and may require some internet searching; you may prefer to use the Audio Bible on our site instead. Below are some free to download audio Bible files that can be downloaded and used with your software.
